The Chapter

The Chapter of Movement Disorders was formed in May 2010 during the Malaysian Society Neuroscience Annual Meeting in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. The inaugural meeting was held in Le Meridien Hotel Kota Kinabalu to elect a protem committee to steer the formation of the chapter.

The protem committee consisted of

  • Prof. Dr. Norlinah Ibrahim (PPUKM – President)
  • Prof. Lim Shen Yang (UMMC – Secretary)
  • Dr. Shanthi Viswanathan (HKL – Treasurer)
  • Dr. Santhi Datuk Puvanarajah (HKL – Member)
  • Dr. Lee Moon Keen (Pantai Medical Centre – Member)
  • Dr. Chris Chong Kang Tird (Sabah Medical Centre – Member)

The chapter aims to promote movement disorders in Malaysia. The chapter has been active since its formation and many activities have been organized. MDC has been organizing the Movement Disorders Teaching Course every two years with the first successful event organized on 28 and 29 September 2012 in UKM Medical Center. MDC has been an official Affiliate Member of the International Parkinson’s & Movement Disorders Society (MDS) since February 2012.

Rules and Regulation of Movement Disorder Council

  • Name
    • Movement Disorder Council of MSN

  • Objectives
    • To promote education, training of health professionals in the care of movement disorder patients
    • To promote research in the field of movement disorders
    • To continuously improve the clinical management of movement disorders

  • Activities
    • Publish guidelines and recommendations on diagnosis and treatment of movement disorders
    • Organize activities to improve public awareness of movement disorders
    • Organize and conduct professional meetings and conferences on movement disorders
    • Facilitate research in the field of movement disorders
    • Provide a source of current and accurate information regarding movement disorders to government or other interested parties
    • Establish networking with local and international academic, health care institutions or societies interested in movement disorders
    • Cullaborate with non-governmental organizations on movement disorder-related issues

  • Office bearers
    • Members of the Movement Disorder Council shall consist of ordinary/ life members of MSN
    • The Movement Disorder Council should have minimum of 6 members but not more than 10 members
    • The members shall elect among themselves a Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer and other office bearers as necessary to administer the affairs of the council. The term of office for the office bearers shall be two years and a maximum of 4 years. The Chairman shall make an annual report to the Council of MSN

  • Changes to the Rules and Regulations
    • Any changes to the rules and regulations of the Movement Disorder Council shall be approved at the AGM of the MSN

  • Meeting
    • The council shall meet at least three times a year. The quorum shall be a minimum of 4 Committee Members

Education Grant Eligibility Criteria

Eligibility Criteria for Movement Disorder Council Education Grant:

  • Points already listed under "MSN Education Grant"
  • If the conference is outside Malaysia, this is focused on Movement Disorders (not a general neurology conference)
  • If the conference is in Malaysia, this is focused on Movement Disorders, or can be a general neurology conference if there is a significant Movement Disorders component

Overseas congress:

  • Up to (maximum) RM4K if attending and has an abstract accepted (or other active participation, e.g., presentation of case at Video Rounds)
  • Up to (maximum) RM2K if attending only

Local congress:

  • Up to (maximum) RM2K if attending and has an abstract accepted (or other active participation, e.g., presentation of case at Video Rounds)
  • Up to (maximum) RM1K if attending only

Additional points:

  • The travel grant would be to cover costs associated with attending the congress, so receipts must be provided to receive reimbursement.
  • Conference registration, economy-class flight, ground transfers and accommodation are items that can be claimed. Meals will not be covered.
